Psalm 46- a song of safety from the storms

Psalm 46

For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. According to alamoth.A song.

1 God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.

4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
5 God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.
6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

7 The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

8 Come and see what the LORD has done,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease
to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the shields with fire.
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”

11 The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

I don’t know about you- but between the earthquake

and the storm- I’m glad I have a safe place.

There really is NO safe place on earth- everywhere is

subject to storms and earthquakes, volcanoes and tornadoes.

Floods and flash floods, unstable neighbours, angry youth and

wars- let us not forget wars.  Life at best is a gamble.

So, I’m thankful I have a God who is Almighty.

Above all the limitations of this world and capable of

making wars cease-

He says , “Be still, and know that I am God;”

And that is exactly what I am doing this weekend.

Praying and being still before the Lord.

Spending time in the only safe place I know.

  1. Thank you Heidi! Just found out my daughter is in the middle of two storms and very sea sick. The safest place I know to be is in God’s hands. So when the storms blow around us we are safe in His hands.

    • Be still, Cynthia, and know that He is God of storms and also a God of peace.
      Be still and hold Meredith in His Heart – reminding Him through your prayers.
      Let’s be still, together, sister.

      • Our children are in the midst of storms and God holds all of them in his hands. I can rest in this because I know He loves them and will take care of them. I will see them again.

  2. While I don’t like to think of life as any type of chance or gamble, I agree that physical safety on earth is an illusion. We are so prone to build our homes here when true rest awaits in Glory alone! This world has so many troubles, but He has overcome the world. So thankful for a sacrificial Savior and a powerful Father. The wind and waves obey!

    • Life here is uncertain… and without God in our focus and equation- without His guidance and care- I think it is a gamble of sorts, trying to find our way without a map or the Creator.
      Life without the Lord is a frightening place- because there is NO shelter from the storms.
      But there is a river whose streams make glad the city of God….
      I really love this psalm!
      Really love our God!

  3. THANK YOU for continuing to remind us that our refuge is in His Word as we pray for our enemy and for those in great need on the east coast. Psalm 91:10There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.11For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.12They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. May His peace, grace and mercy permeate the lives and hearts of all those who reach out to Him – loved your Plan B with the defrosted stew meat!!!
