In My Kitchen- January 2013

Welcome back to my kitchen!

Another year of living to do- one day at a time-

one meal at a time- one recipe at a time.

In my kitchen…

005

is my new laundry detergent.

I am so sick of EXPENSIVE and gaggingly perfumed

laundry detergent.  And I’m tired of hearing all the

claims for clean and bright clothes that are no more clean

than they should be for much more cost.  Plus they are

so sudsy that it never seems to rinse out properly.

So, when my niece gave me this recipe-

020

I started making my own.

This is so much more economical.  And it rinses out beautifully- PLUS- my clothes smell

clean – not perfumed- and they look brighter.

I just made a second batch- using Fels Naptha laundry soap bar instead of Zote.

018instead of pink-it’s yellow-047

But it works just as well- and hardly cost more than  25 cents a load!

In my kitchen…

008

Is this lovely sea glass candle holder-

028

So pretty when lit up from the inside!

In my kitchen…

026

is a delicious selection of teas- Lemon and Ginger, Rooibus- Painted Lady,

a wonderful masala chai, and Keemun- one of my favorite afternoon black teas.

In my kitchen…

 009

is a jar of preserved lemons that my darling Willow made me for Christmas-

I have a book of recipes in my Ohio kitchen that I am dying to try with these!

In my kitchen…

049

Is pizza- enough to feed my family and then a little left over for lunch later this week.

In my kitchen…

061

is this sauce- from one of the parishioners at my son’s church.  I don’t know Ethel- but

she makes a killer butterscotch sauce!

In my kitchen…

063

is this truffle trio!  I’ve used the salt, and tasted the honey- it is so deep and flavorful-

can’t wait to play with them!

In my kitchen…

062

Craison –nut oatmeal cookies.  Just perfect after the holiday onslaught of sweets!

In my kitchen…

067

are some really good bottled glazes and chocolate toppings.  This one is great on top of

pork tenderloin!

Well- that’s my kitchen down here in Chincoteague!

    • Hi Glenda- it is a nice combination. And I am quite happy with everything in this kitchen- I love coming down here and using the gas stove top and convection oven- I have electric at my home in Ohio and I much prefer the gas top- especially since it has 6 burners!
      Happy New Year to you!

  1. Hello Heidi, Happy New Year, I love your sea glass candle holder and I’m really interested in the home made washing powder – I do get sick of the whiter than white, anti-bacterial blurb that goes with the commercial stuff.

    • Jan- I really like the homemade detergent over the boughten- I know all the ingredients and there is a cleaner feel to the clothes. Plus- the laundry soap is especially good with getting out stains!
I love sea glass- and love to use it rather than have it collect in a jar.
I made some ornaments out of sea glass this year- I’ll have to do a post on those sometime.

  2. Glad to see that you have the recipe for the powdered version of laundry soap. A friend shared a liquid version with me but there was so much work attached to it that I just never brought myself to trying it on my own. We don’t have Fels Naptha or Zote here, but use a sunny yellow bar of Sunlight instead.

    • Hi Martha!
I have the liquid detergent recipe, too, but find that it separates and needs a whole lot of shaking each time you use it. This needs to be shaken and redistributed as well, but a few shakes will do it. I am really happy with the results of this one.
Happy New Year and thanks for stopping by!

    • Thanks for stopping by, Helen!
I’ve had great success with the detergent so far. This is my second batch and I like the price- and the clean.
      Have a great new year!

  3. Woohoo Heidi, your kitchen benches must be full! I’ve never made laundry detergent before, but I know what you mean about the perfume! Thankfully since we’ve had the front loader, all the detergents are low sudsing and we only need to use a tiny capful per load. Your candleholder is so pretty, and I love the selection of teas – I received a few for Christmas as well!

Can’t wait to see what you do with the preserved lemons and truffle salt! 🙂 Happy New Year, dearheart! xx

    • Hi Celia,
I really like the detergent- no hidden chemicals-and no overwhelming fragrance.
The candle is just right- warm and friendly light!
I’m looking forward to playing with my new ingredients- if I have good success I’ll share! 🙂

  4. Trying to think what we use for detergent. Will have to ask the laundry controller, (the man who likes playing with machines, yes, he does the laundry, so I am not complaining) OK, he says we use a lot of water softener, as we live in a hard water area and then as little detergent as he thinks we need and we only use the biological enzyme stuff with a few things and very plain unscented stuff with the rest, ditto fabric softener. And for silk (we have lots of knitted silk vests for our poor sad old backs, we use something eco). But I hate those smells, almost as much as I hate air fresheners, cough, choke, wheeze… so we use the minmum. Possibly too much information there 🙂

Cruising your goodies here and wanting pizza badly – and if you would just look the other way while I dip my spoon into your butterscotch sauce – mm you have lovely goodies in the kitchen this month. I should try and do one of these posts but the light is so dire at the moment, we have murky brown snow cloud in the sky and the daylight is fading fast. xx Jo

    • Hey Joanna-
Thanks for dropping by- You are welcome to dip your spoon into any jar I have residing in my kitchen- grab a piece of pizza and sit for a visit.
I know what you mean by dire lights and fading daylight. I long for a full day of sunlight.

  5. Good for you making your own laundry detergent! I know what you mean about those smelly ones… Your pizza looks delicious as do those craisin- oatmeal nut cookies. It’s snowing here right now, and I have a feeling there’s going to be a lot of baking going on. Thanks for the inspiration!

  6. Hi Emilie-
Baking, eating, and watching old movies and reading books is all I’m really interested in doing right now. 🙂 I have managed to do a few loads of laundry and sweep the floor and wash the dishes- but that was only by necessity. Winter is not my favorite season- so I tend to go into a temporary suspension of all important activity. ANyway- great to hear from you- hope January is treating you well.
