  <br \/>&#160;&#160; it is fitting for the upright to praise him.   <br \/><sup>2<\/sup> Praise the LORD with the harp;   <br \/>&#160;&#160; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.   <br \/><sup>3<\/sup> Sing to him a new song;   <br \/>&#160;&#160; play skillfully, and shout for joy.   <\/p>\n<p><sup>4<\/sup> For the word of the LORD is right and true;     <br \/>&#160;&#160; he is faithful in all he does.     <br \/><sup>5<\/sup> The LORD loves righteousness and justice;     <br \/>&#160;&#160; the earth is full of his unfailing love. <\/p>\n<p><sup>6<\/sup> By the word of the LORD the heavens were made,     <br \/>&#160;&#160; their starry host by the breath of his mouth.     <br \/><sup>7<\/sup> He gathers the waters of the sea into jars<sup>[<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm+33&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-14374a\">a<\/a>]<\/sup>;     <br \/>&#160;&#160; he puts the deep into storehouses.     <br \/><sup>8<\/sup> Let all the earth fear the LORD;     <br \/>&#160;&#160; let all the people of the world revere him.     <br \/><sup>9<\/sup> For he spoke, and it came to be;     <br \/>&#160;&#160; he commanded, and it stood firm. <\/p>\n<p><sup>10<\/sup> The LORD foils the plans of the nations;     <br \/>&#160;&#160; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.     <br \/><sup>11<\/sup> But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever,     <br \/>&#160;&#160; the purposes of his heart through all generations. <\/p>\n<p><sup>12<\/sup> Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD,     <br \/>&#160;&#160; the people he chose for his inheritance.     <br \/><sup>13<\/sup> From heaven the LORD looks down     <br \/>&#160;&#160; and sees all mankind;     <br \/><sup>14<\/sup> from his dwelling place he watches     <br \/>&#160;&#160; all who live on earth\u2014     <br \/><sup>15<\/sup> he who forms the hearts of all,     <br \/>&#160;&#160; who considers everything they do. <\/p>\n<p><sup>16<\/sup> No king is saved by the size of his army;     <br \/>&#160;&#160; no warrior escapes by his great strength.     <br \/><sup>17<\/sup> A horse is a vain hope for deliverance;     <br \/>&#160;&#160; despite all its great strength it cannot save.     <br \/><sup>18<\/sup> But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him,     <br \/>&#160;&#160; on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,     <br \/><sup>19<\/sup> to deliver them from death     <br \/>&#160;&#160; and keep them alive in famine. <\/p>\n<p><sup>20<\/sup> We wait in hope for the LORD;     <br \/>&#160;&#160; he is our help and our shield.     <br \/><sup>21<\/sup> In him our hearts rejoice,     <br \/>&#160;&#160; for we trust in his holy name.     <br \/><sup>22<\/sup> May your unfailing love be with us, LORD,     <br \/>&#160;&#160; even as we put our hope in you. <\/p>\n<p><em>Sing to him a new song\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>there are many references to a new song in the <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>scriptures- most of them in the psalms.&#160; <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>What does it mean to sing a new song?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Is it about a change in tone or behaviour?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Or is it more about style and tune?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Does it require a change of attitude?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Perhaps we need to find some deeper meaning,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>some hidden symbol or heightened understanding<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>of the text.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This psalm has 22 verses- and often that suggests that<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>the psalm is an <strong>acrostic<\/strong> psalm- each verse corresponding<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>with the Hebrew alphabet&#160; Alef to Tav.&#160; This is a very old<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>mnemonic device used by the Jewish people to signify<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>that the psalm is all inclusive \u2013 what we would say includes<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>everything from A to Z.&#160; The next Psalm \u201334- is an acrostic<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>psalm- but 33 is not.&#160; It is a <strong>NEW<\/strong>&#160; song.&#160; It has its own style<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>and rhythm \u2013 it is not following the tradition, but speaks of<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>the LORD from an experiential point of view.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Not a hymn- a praise song.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I\u2019ve been singing a new song, lately.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Looking at the brevity and frailty of life here from a different<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>point of view- and praising the Lord for His protection.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I\u2019m recognizing that truly, God is in control.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And I\u2019m grateful for His Providence.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Singing a new song in Akron, Ohio.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Psalm 33 1 Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous;
