padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"009\" src=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/009_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"009\" width=\"244\" height=\"164\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Strawberries- a guest post by Robin Loretta Hrubik<\/p>\n<p>( First let me introduce the post.\u00a0 Robin wrote a small book of memories<\/p>\n<p>for me on my 40th birthday.\u00a0 She was going to be on a tour of Europe over<\/p>\n<p>the weeks before and after my birthday- so she wrote me a collection of<\/p>\n<p>essays, made up a marvelous treasure hunt for Jordan and me to follow, and<\/p>\n<p>put together a campaign of birthday wishes from almost everyone who knew<\/p>\n<p>me and orchestrated a birthday party at a friend\u2019s home- it was amazing<\/p>\n<p>how very much she was <strong>there <\/strong>without actually being there.<\/p>\n<p>This is the entry she wrote about strawberries and our childhood.)<\/p>\n<p><em>Who doesn\u2019t love them?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Maybe my small patch will produce while I\u2019m in Europe.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Stop over and pick a handful, wipe off the dirt and pop a sun-kissed warm berry<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>into your mouth and close your eyes to remember\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>those delectable teeny-tiny seed covered WILD strawberries that grew<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>on the bank on the other side of the dirt road.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We were children of the Earth more so in those days.\u00a0 We\u00a0 probably had &#8221; chores\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>WORK- that four letter word- assignments awaiting us.\u00a0 But oh, when those<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>berries were ripe- we Picked!\u00a0 Such work it was- adults were too impatient to spend<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>precious time at such a labor-intensive job.\u00a0 Yet to us it was a gift straight from heaven.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Smell the sweet breeze- the delicate scent of slightly crushed berry mixed with grassy,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> earthy aromas and the hot pungent waves of hot tar and auto exhaust.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We tuned out everything to focus on our worthy task and reward to come.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>When we had finally picked\u201d enough\u201d, we would run to the house and prepare our feast.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Between the bank and the house something must have happened to our handfuls of <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>berries.\u00a0 I always felt we had more outside and somehow lost Large amounts by the time<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>we were ready to add the sugar and mash, mash, mash!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Who can forget that tart\/sweet full flavor of\u00a0 those few spoonfuls of wild\u00a0 berries?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We savored them quickly- by now someone had come upon us and assessed our<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>childishness (they said stupidness)\u00a0\u00a0 and broke into our play\/work.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>All of a sudden we saw (we were forced to see) the kitchen as it really was-<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>dirt tracked on the floor,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>water splashed and dripping,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>berry stems and leaves scattered,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>sugar spilt everywhere- <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>our hands sticky<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>our faces smeared.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But we had had our adventure, our fun!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>They couldn\u2019t take it away!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Thank you, Lord, for not allowing us to be \u201ccaught\u201d until we had finished our<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>moment of \u201cbe-ing\u201d.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And thank you Lord, for this book of memories I can still share with my sister,<\/p>\n<p>it helps deal with the loss of her for so many years.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the quick recipe for Almost strawberry pie!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/015.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"015\" src=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/015_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"015\" width=\"460\" height=\"308\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is quick to put together, but you need some of the ingredients to already<\/p>\n<p>be prepared.\u00a0 First wash and cut up a pint of strawberries and lightly sugar them<\/p>\n<p>(about 1 TBSP per pint of berries).\u00a0 Then stir 1\/3 cup of strawberry frozen jam- I<\/p>\n<p>use the recipe on the pectin package- into the berries.\u00a0 This works better than<\/p>\n<p>a glaze and adds sweetness, color and flavor.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, you need several pieces of pastry, sprinkled with sugar , baked ahead and<\/p>\n<p>cut into pie shaped pieces.\u00a0 I usually do this with any left over pie dough and store<\/p>\n<p>it in the freezer for just this purpose.\u00a0 Put them all together on a plate, add whipped<\/p>\n<p>cream and you have a little bit of summer delight sitting on the table in front of you!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Strawberries- a guest post by Robin Loretta Hrubik ( First let me introduce the post.\u00a0 Robin wrote a small book of memories for me on my 40th birthday.\u00a0 She was going to be on a tour of Europe over the &hellip;
