{"id":4450,"date":"2011-07-16T22:27:32","date_gmt":"2011-07-17T02:27:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/2011\/07\/psalm-111an-old-song\/"},"modified":"2011-07-16T22:27:32","modified_gmt":"2011-07-17T02:27:32","slug":"psalm-111an-old-song","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.heidiannie.com\/?p=4450","title":{"rendered":"Psalm 111\u2013 An Old Song"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6>Psalm 111<\/h6>\n<p><sup>1<\/sup>Praise the LORD.<\/p>\n<p>I will extol the LORD with all my heart<br \/>\nin the council of the upright and in the assembly.<\/p>\n<p><sup>2<\/sup> Great are the works of the LORD;<br \/>\nthey are pondered by all who delight in them.<br \/>\n<sup>3<\/sup> Glorious and majestic are his deeds,<br \/>\nand his righteousness endures forever.<br \/>\n<sup>4<\/sup> He has caused his wonders to be remembered;<br \/>\nthe LORD is gracious and compassionate.<br \/>\n<sup>5<\/sup> He provides food for those who fear him;<br \/>\nhe remembers his covenant forever.<\/p>\n<p><sup>6<\/sup> He has shown his people the power of his works,<br \/>\ngiving them the lands of other nations.<br \/>\n<sup>7<\/sup> The works of his hands are faithful and just;<br \/>\nall his precepts are trustworthy.<br \/>\n<sup>8<\/sup> They are established for ever and ever,<br \/>\nenacted in faithfulness and uprightness.<br \/>\n<sup>9<\/sup> He provided redemption for his people;<br \/>\nhe ordained his covenant forever\u2014<br \/>\nholy and awesome is his name.<\/p>\n<p><sup>10<\/sup> The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom;<br \/>\nall who follow his precepts have good understanding.<br \/>\nTo him belongs eternal praise.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Today&#8217;s guest blogger; Frank Fodor<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Psalms 111\u00a0 and 112 are a matched pair.\u00a0 Both consist of ten verses<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>and each poem contains twenty-two phrases which are arranged<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>as an acrostic, the phrase successively commencing with the letters of<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>the Hebrew alphabet.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(quoted from the New Bible Commentary, Eerdmans,\u00a0 publisher)<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Both psalms begin with the phrase, Jah, which means Hallelujah (literally).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Psalm 111 through 119 were supposed to have been sung by the Jewish people at the<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>celebration of the Passover, namely the singing of the Gospel Hal<\/em><em>lel.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>That hymn, in all likelihood, which our blessed Lord sang with his disciples after<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>last supper.\u00a0 The psalm is composed in al<\/em>p<em>habetical order, each verse containing two letters.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The first verse begins with aleph, while the letter beth is pla<\/em>c<em>ed at the commencement of the<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>of the next half of the verse<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Example: (aleph) I will praise Jehovah with my whole heart,<\/p>\n<p>(beth) in the congregation and assembly of the just.<\/p>\n<p>2. (gimel) The works of Jehovah are great<\/p>\n<p>(deleth) sought out of all who have a desire to them.<\/p>\n<p><em><\/em>3. (he) His work is beautiful and magnificent,<\/p>\n<p>(vau) And his justice is forever.<\/p>\n<p>4.
