border-top: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px\" height=\"338\" alt=\"saffron sun and family 008\" src=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-008_thumb.jpg\" width=\"451\" border=\"0\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>I made saffron bread with a sourdough base today.<\/p>\n<p>It was a beautiful dough- silky and easily managed- just right for shaping- the sun face came out just right- I love the almonds in his eyes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-005.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px\" height=\"375\" alt=\"saffron sun and family 005\" src=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-005_thumb.jpg\" width=\"499\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The turtle- well,&nbsp; I forgot to put in currants for his eyes, so he is blind- but cute.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-006.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px\" height=\"180\" alt=\"saffron sun and family 006\" src=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-006_thumb.jpg\" width=\"239\" border=\"0\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>And small- he fits right into the palm of my hand- a perfect size for my grandson.<\/p>\n<p>And following Joanna&#8217;s example @ <a href=\"http:\/\/zebbakes.wordpress.com\/\">Zeb Bakes<\/a> , I stenciled a loaf, just to look pretty. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-007.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px\" height=\"416\" alt=\"saffron sun and family 007\" src=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-007_thumb.jpg\" width=\"313\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And it does look pretty-<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px\" height=\"332\" alt=\"saffron sun and family 010\" src=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-010_thumb.jpg\" width=\"442\" border=\"0\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>and the texture is light and the crust chewy and the flavor is just plain yummy!<\/p>\n<p>I started this bread last night- <\/p>\n<p>here as best as I can remember is the recipe, if you are interested.<\/p>\n<p>1 cup of sourdough starter<\/p>\n<p>2 cups plain flour<\/p>\n<p>2 pinches of instant yeast<\/p>\n<p>1 cup hot water<\/p>\n<p>This is for the sponge or poulish as Joanna calls it.&nbsp; Stir well with wooden spoon and cover with plastic wrap.&nbsp; Place in draft free area and allow to raise overnight.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning add:<\/p>\n<p>3 cups flour<\/p>\n<p>2 scant tsp sea salt<\/p>\n<p>1 cup milk, scalded<\/p>\n<p>1\/2 stick (1\/4 cup) butter<\/p>\n<p>1 large egg<\/p>\n<p>1\/4 cup sugar <\/p>\n<p>2 pinches of saffron<\/p>\n<p>Method:<\/p>\n<p>While milk is still hot, melt butter in it, add two pinches of saffron and stir well, set aside, beat egg and add to milk when cooled.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-015.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px\" height=\"128\" alt=\"saffron sun and family 015\" src=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-015_thumb.jpg\" width=\"170\" border=\"0\"><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px\" height=\"128\" alt=\"saffron sun and family 014\" src=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-014_thumb.jpg\" width=\"170\" border=\"0\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Add dry ingredients to 1 cup of flour and mix into sponge alternatively with liquid.&nbsp; Mix well, adding additional flour until dough is quite stiff ( you may need more flour than listed).&nbsp; Dump out of bowl and start to knead.<\/p>\n<p>Knead dough for at least 8-10 minutes.&nbsp;&nbsp; If is is too stiff at first, allow to rest on the cupboard, covered, for at least 20 minutes to relax and then try again.<\/p>\n<p>When dough feels smooth and pliable, place into greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap and let raise until doubled- this could take up to 3 hours depending on the warmth, humidity,age of starter and many other factors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-016.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px\" height=\"149\" alt=\"saffron sun and family 016\" src=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-016_thumb.jpg\" width=\"198\" border=\"0\"><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px\" height=\"149\" alt=\"saffron sun and family 001\" src=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-001_thumb.jpg\" width=\"198\" border=\"0\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>When risen, dump from bowl and divide dough for your shaping purposes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px\" height=\"180\" alt=\"saffron sun and family 002\" src=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-002_thumb.jpg\" width=\"239\" border=\"0\"><\/a> I used a little less than half to form the sun. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px\" height=\"126\" alt=\"saffron sun and family 003\" src=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-003_thumb.jpg\" width=\"167\" border=\"0\"><\/a>about 6 1\/2 ounces for the turtle,<\/p>\n<p>And the last half for the loaf.<\/p>\n<p>I used a stencil and olive oil spray to design the stenciled loaf.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px\" height=\"180\" alt=\"saffron sun and family 004\" src=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-004_thumb.jpg\" width=\"239\" border=\"0\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>I used a precut stencil and lightly sprayed top loaf of the bread with olive oil.<\/p>\n<p>Sprinkle flour into stencil cut outs and remove carefully.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Allow to raise again, about&nbsp; 1 1\/2&nbsp; hours<\/p>\n<p>Bake at 350F for at 30 minutes, until golden brown.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/saffron-sun-and-family-0071.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right: 0px;
