{"id":1392,"date":"2010-02-21T00:06:49","date_gmt":"2010-02-21T04:06:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/heidiannie.com\/?p=1392"},"modified":"2010-02-21T00:06:49","modified_gmt":"2010-02-21T04:06:49","slug":"the-journey-to-faith-psalms-3-and-27","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.heidiannie.com\/?p=1392","title":{"rendered":"The Journey to Faith- Psalms 3 and 27"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Sometimes we need our enemies to help us define who we are.&nbsp; More often, we need to go through trials so that we can recognize our weakness and vulnerability and the reliance we have in our God.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6>Psalm 3<\/h6>\n<p><sup>1-2<\/sup> God! Look! Enemies past counting! Enemies sprouting like mushrooms, <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; Mobs of them all around me, roaring their mockery: <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; &#8220;Hah! No help for him from God!&#8221; <br \/><sup>3-4<\/sup> But you, God, shield me on all sides; <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; You ground my feet, you lift my head high; <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; With all my might I shout up to God, <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; His answers thunder from the holy mountain. <br \/><sup>5-6<\/sup> I stretch myself out. I sleep. <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; Then I&#8217;m up again\u2014rested, tall and steady, <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; Fearless before the enemy mobs <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; Coming at me from all sides. <br \/><sup>7<\/sup> Up, God! My God, help me! <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; Slap their faces, <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; First this cheek, then the other, <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; Your fist hard in their teeth! <br \/><sup>8<\/sup> Real help comes from God. <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; Your blessing clothes your people! <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6>Psalm 27<\/h6>\n<h6>A David Psalm<\/h6>\n<p><sup>1<\/sup> Light, space, zest\u2014 that&#8217;s God! <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; So, with him on my side I&#8217;m fearless, <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; afraid of no one and nothing. <br \/><sup>2<\/sup> When vandal hordes ride down <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; ready to eat me alive, <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; Those bullies and toughs <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; fall flat on their faces. <br \/><sup>3<\/sup> When besieged, <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I&#8217;m calm as a baby. <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; When all hell breaks loose, <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I&#8217;m collected and cool. <br \/><sup>4<\/sup> I&#8217;m asking God for one thing, <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; only one thing: <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; To live with him in his house <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; my whole life long. <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; I&#8217;ll contemplate his beauty; <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I&#8217;ll study at his feet. <br \/><sup>5<\/sup> That&#8217;s the only quiet, secure place <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; in a noisy world, <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; The perfect getaway, <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; far from the buzz of traffic. <br \/><sup>6<\/sup> God holds me head and shoulders <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; above all who try to pull me down. <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; I&#8217;m headed for his place to offer anthems <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; that will raise the roof! <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; Already I&#8217;m singing God-songs; <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I&#8217;m making music to God. <br \/><sup>7-9<\/sup> Listen, God, I&#8217;m calling at the top of my lungs: <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &#8220;Be good to me! Answer me!&#8221; <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; When my heart whispered, &#8220;Seek God,&#8221; <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; my whole being replied, <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; &#8220;I&#8217;m seeking him!&#8221; <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Don&#8217;t hide from me now! <br \/><sup>9-10<\/sup> You&#8217;ve always been right there for me; <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; don&#8217;t turn your back on me now. <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; Don&#8217;t throw me out, don&#8217;t abandon me; <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; you&#8217;ve always kept the door open. <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; My father and mother walked out and left me, <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; but God took me in. <br \/><sup>11-12<\/sup> Point me down your highway, God; <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; direct me along a well-lighted street; <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; show my enemies whose side you&#8217;re on. <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; Don&#8217;t throw me to the dogs, <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; those liars who are out to get me, <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; filling the air with their threats. <br \/><sup>13-14<\/sup> I&#8217;m sure now I&#8217;ll see God&#8217;s goodness <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; in the exuberant earth. <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; Stay with God! <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Take heart. Don&#8217;t quit. <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; I&#8217;ll say it again: <br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Stay with God.<\/p>\n<p><em>The language is filled with confidence, the mood is exuberant- like a song of joy along this journey of faith.&nbsp; David knows the LORD well and describes Him from his own experiences.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>As light and salvation, a stronghold, beautiful in His temple ( still a tabernacle or tent at this point.)&nbsp; David&nbsp; has come through some nasty situations and uses them as a springboard to praise.&nbsp; His past burdens and narrow escapes have become areas of strength.&nbsp; His enemies helped David get a clearer vision of the Love and protection and provision of God in his life.&nbsp; <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>David&#8217;s present song comes from his previous fears and shaken faith- in his darkest hours, he reaches out toward the <u>light<\/u> of the <u>LORD<\/u> , when caught in a trap, he recognized the <u>salvation<\/u>&nbsp; offered by his<u> savior<\/u> , when camped upon a lonely plain, only God was his <u>stronghold.<\/u>&nbsp; In the midst of slander, siege, war and personal attacks, he know he will prevail because the LORD is his<u> beautiful <\/u>safe place, keeping him like a protected guest <u>hidden <\/u>away from harm.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>He ends this psalm with strong testimony of God&#8217;s goodness&nbsp; The secret of this witness is in the heart of faith &#8211; verse 3 of psalm 27 says &#8221; my heart will not fear&#8221;.&nbsp; God can help us conquer fear when we obey faithfully and learn to worship Him, walk with Him, and wait for His leading and presence.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>David has learned to trust in God.&nbsp; And so must I learn that lesson.&nbsp; Over and over I need to learn that even in the most dire danger and fearful moments I cannot trust in my own strength or wits.&nbsp; I have watched too many action films and read too many comic books where men are the heroes of the story.&nbsp; I want to rely on myself- I want to succeed in the face of my enemies by my own rights.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But over time, it has become clear that it is by God&#8217;s grace and protection that I have overcome life&#8217;s obstacles.&nbsp; It is only through His mercy that I have not been consumed and succumbed to the sinful habits and unhealthy practices that I am so prone to follow.&nbsp; I only know righteousness when I remain in His presence.&nbsp; I am on a journey, but not by myself.&nbsp; I walk with fellow believers, following the paths that were laid out for us by our loving Father.&nbsp; We travel together, sharing our stories of salvation- the testimonies of victories we have experienced and as we share we come to recognize that it is Christ who has won our victories- Christ who is the captain of our salvation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Our enemies help us to define who we are, but it is Jesus Christ who gives us our identity.&nbsp; <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes we need our enemies to help us define who we are.&nbsp; More often, we need to go through trials so that we can recognize our weakness and vulnerability and the reliance we have in our God.&nbsp; Psalm 3 1-2 &hellip; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heidiannie.com\/?p=1392\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[12],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1392","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-spiritualinsights"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.heidiannie.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1392","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.heidiannie.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.heidiannie.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.heidiannie.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.heidiannie.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=1392"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"http:\/\/www.heidiannie.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1392\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.heidiannie.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=1392"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.heidiannie.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=1392"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.heidiannie.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=1392"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
